Thursday Recs

And we're back again with Thursday Recs!

Do you have a rec for this week? Just reply to this post with something queer or queer-adjacent (such as, soap made by a queer person that isn't necessarily queer themed) that you'd, well, recommend. Self-recs are welcome, as are recs for fandom-related content!

Or have you tried something that's been recced here? Do you have your own report to share about it? I'd love to hear about it!

“What Fresh Hell Is This” by Heather Corrina. It’s a nonfiction book about perimenopause and menopause written by a nonbinary person, and it’s so incredibly heartening to see a text like this that doesn’t genderize bodies. While the author does go into the fact that menopause itself is highly genderized by society and there are intersections with misogyny, ableism, etc., in how it is perceived and dealt with by society, the author is careful not to normalize the idea that only women go through this.

There’s also an appendix discussing menopause for AMAB bodies, for trans women or trans-feminine folks who were on estrogen and then had to stop taking it.

As a disabled, queer, nonbinary person, it’s rare to find a medical self-help book that I feel is speaking to my experiences in those realms, and even rarer to find books that explicitly identify that our medical and societal systems are eugenicist, racist, classist, sexist, and just incredibly harmful in a multitude of ways, and this affects our functioning on both psychological and physical levels.
