Personally I didn't see the movie because I was already tired of Marvel and found the 80s aesthetic unpalatable. Reading this analysis makes me think there was some veiled or internalised queer-phobia floating around the production rooms.
Sorry if this is something you already knew about, but I thought it needed even more visibility.
