Is this clear without illustrations? I’ve made illustrations, but I want it to be clear without them.

These are for how to make a precise version of this flag, but… Can you grab a handy scrap of paper and more-or-less follow along, to make a recognizable, if imprecise, doodle version?

Step one:

Clearly mark the center of your flag, and make a vertical line through it, so that the long side is divided in half (but you can still see the center); divide the short side into thirds.

Step two:

Draw a diagonal line from the top left corner to the point half way across the length of the flag, and a third of the way from the top. This angle forms the basis of the zigzag motif (I suggest copying it to your clipboard if you’re working on a computer, or making a physical template if doing this by hand)

Step three:

Draw a second line of the same angle and length in the middle of the flag, intersecting the center point (if working on a computer, paste the diagonal line you drew in step two, or trace your template, if making this by hand).

Step four:

Flip the line / template horizontally, and connect the top point to the bottom of the line you drew in step two so that it intersects the line you drew in step three; erase the portions of both lines to the left of the intersection.

Step five:

Draw your diagonal line in the bottom right corner of your flag, and connect it to the line in the middle by repeating the steps in step four.

You should now have a zigzag line connecting the upper left corner of your flag with the lower right corner. It should have three longer sections going down and to the right, connected by two shorter sections going down and to the left; if working on the computer, copy this whole zigzag into your clipboard, or trace it to make a physical template.

Step six:

Shift this zigzag line to the left by 10% the whole length of your flag (if you’re doodling this on a 3″ X 5″ index card, for example, shift to the left by half an inch, if you’re making a meter long flag, shift to the left by 10 cm, etc.).

This forms the center stripe of your flag, and will be width for each of the subsequent stripes – before the black dividing bands are added.

Step seven:

Shift the zigzag line slightly down and to the left twice more, by 10% the total length of your flag each time, so that all angles remain parallel to your previous line, and the width is consistent.

Step eight:

Going back to the center line as reference, shift slightly up and to the right twice more, by 10% the total length of your flag each time, so that all angles remain parallel to your previous line, and the width is consistent.

Step nine:

Widen the dividing bands between the stripes by 10% the stripes’ width on either side of the zigzag lines you’ve already drawn (If you’ve made your stripes 10 cm wide, for example, widen the dividing lines on either side by 1 cm. The final result should have the dividing lines be roughly 1/4 the width of the colored stripes. and the width of all the colored bands together be roughly 1/2 the total length of your flag).

Step ten (the last step):

Color your flag.

Warning: I am considering changing the colors of the stripes, because it is difficult to find a shade of purple that is both clearly visible and consistent.

The field, and dividing lines between the stripes: Black

The colors of each of the stripes as they are now, going from the left (bottom) to the right (top)

Light Blue,
Yellow,
Green,
Red,
Purple

The new colors I’m considering for the stripes:

Light Blue
Yellow
White
Red
Green

(If you want to prescribe specific meanings to each of the colors, the white stripe in the center would be an apt choice for Invisible and undiagnosed disabilities, both in terms of color and position)
